Teaching-Learning-Research: Design and Environments
Virtual Conference
Wednesday 2 December 2020
Routledge, AMPS and PARADE
Manchester School of Architecture, University of Manchester
On 2 December, Lindsay and Susan presented a co-authored paper at the Teaching-Learning-Research: Design and Environments Virtual Conference. The paper, entitled “Beyond the Frame: Collaborating on an Undergraduate Research Experience,” analyzes the structure of their collaborative photo research project, which is documented by this website.
The argument presented in the paper is built upon three themes that guide the research process: foundational instruction in visual literacy; open, anti-hierarchical exchange; and affordance for project growth. The authors claim that these principles, when applied to supervised undergraduate research, “position participants in a context favourable to develop research skills, visual literacy, and independent agency for future studies.”[1] Further, the paper advances the project approach as a framework for fostering meaningful collaboration between advisor and student.
Following the conference, the paper was accepted for inclusion in the conference proceedings. Now published, the paper is available to read here.
The Teaching-Learning-Research: Design and Environments Virtual Conference was coordinated by Routledge, AMPS (Architecture Media Politics Society), and PARADE (Publication and Research in Art, Architecture, Design and Environment) in collaboration with the Manchester School of Architecture at the University of Manchester / Manchester Metropolitan University. Lindsay and Susan thank all organizations involved in hosting the conference.
Additional gratitude is extended to Dr. Lisa Landrum, Associate Dean (Research), and Anna Thurmayr, Head, Department of Landscape Architecture, for providing funding assistance for conference registration.
