This work comes from Atget’s series of photographic documents of a modernizing Old Paris. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Atget often made these images of the built environment to sell to artists such as the Surrealists as studies.
Eugène Atget was a French documentary photographer in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Atget made photographs of a wide range of subjects including monuments, landscapes and the built environment. Most notably, Atget documented the transformation of Old Paris into a modern city led by Baron Haussmann. Atget's work is considered to have had a significant impact on generations of documentary photographers that followed.
